The formula
N·m = kgf·m × 9.80665
Where the factor comes from — each unit by its definition, then its size in SI:
1 kgf·m = kgf × m = 9.80665 N·m1 N·m is the SI unit of torque.
Dividing the two SI sizes gives the factor: 9.80665, exact — every step above is a definition, not a measurement. The reverse factor is 0.101971621298.
Torque is force times lever arm, in newton-metres. Workshop manuals mix N·m, lbf·ft and lbf·in; a torque wrench set in the wrong unit over- or under-tightens by a large factor.
Worked examples
- A car wheel nut: 11.2169 kgf·m = 110 N·m — 11.2169 × 9.80665 = 110
- A bolt spec in a US manual (30 lbf·ft): 4.14765 kgf·m = 40.6745 N·m — 4.14765 × 9.80665 = 40.6745
- A bicycle stem bolt: 1.01972 kgf·m = 10 N·m — 1.01972 × 9.80665 = 10
Frequently asked questions
How many newton-metres is 1 kgf·m?
1 kgf·m = 9.80665 N·m, exactly, from the unit definitions.
How do I convert newton-metres back to kilogram-force metres?
Divide by 9.80665 — or multiply by 0.101971621298: 1 N·m = 0.101971621298 kgf·m.
